Consider a system made out of a possibly large number of identical copies of a two-dimensional dispersive billiard table and let us further assume a form of infrequent pairwise energy-preserving interaction among them. The interaction we will consider will typically be of collisional type and may therefore induce the exchange of a substantial amount of energy among the colliding pair. The question we address is the following: What is the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents of such a system? It turns out this question is closely related to a famous problem in probability theory, first addressed by Laplace in his attempt to construct an error function towards the end of the 18th century: What is the distribution of the ordered lengths of a fixed number of random divisions of the unit interval?

In this talk I will discuss fine geometric properties of solutions to fully nonlinear elliptic equations with singular potentials. Singularities occurs along the (unkown) free surface {u=0} and the degree of the singularity determines optimal regularity estimates for u though the singular level set. These classes of equations are related to important free boundary problems that were previously accessed only through variational considerations.

Abstract<br /> <br /> This talk will be concerned with the origin, understanding and some consequences of complexity in the collective behaviour of "many-body" systems, arising through conflicts involving competitive interactions and/or constraints together with microscopic quenched disorder, even with relatively simple individual units and relatively simple few-body interactions. The perspective will be that of Physics as a mind-set.<br /> <br /> However, I shall discuss not only topics traditionally recognised as Physics but also others more traditionally considered to be within the domains of Biology, Economics, Information theory, Computer Science and Social Science. The common links come through conceptualization, minimal modelling and mathematical formulation, rather than apparent physical similarity.<br /> <br /> More particularly, I shall concentrate on concepts and methodologies which have their origin in attempts to understand some (fairly obscure) complex solids, but try to show their much wider and richer applicability and potential, some of the successes in application, some of the similarities and differences between systems, and some of the challenges that remain in the symbiosis of subjects.

English. Title: Normal Bundle of Rational Curves and the Waring's Problem. Abstract: The problem to determine the splitting of the normal bundle of rational curves has been considered in the 80s in a series of papers by Ghione and Sacchiero and in another series by Eisenbud and Van de Ven in the case of rational space curves. This case was solved by Sacchiero. Few facts are known in dimension greater than 3. We aim to explain our approach in any dimension and the interplay between the Waring decomposition and the splitting of the normal bundle.

There is a well-developed theory of bivariate splines (or piecewise polynomials) on planar triangulations, which allow us, in principle, to construct splines of arbitrary smoothness. However, such splines can only be used to obtain parametric surfaces that are topologically equivalent to a planar region. This theory of bivariate splines fails completely when one wants to define smooth surfaces of arbitrary topological genus. In this talk we shall address the causes of this serious gap in the spline theory and discuss possible remedies. This is joint work with Carolina Beccari (Univ. of Bologna) and Dan Gonsor (The Boeing Co.).

Consider the semiclassical limit, as the Planck constant $hbarri 0$, of bound states of a quantum particle in one-dimensional potential wells. We justify the semiclassical asymptotics of eigenfunctions and recover the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition. Our approach yields some new results: the quantization condition for discontinuous potentials, the precise estimate in the Weyl asymptotic formula for eigenvalues. We reconsider also a passage of a particle through a potential barrier finding a condition which fixes phases of the wave function from the left or from the right of the barrier. This leads to the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition for multiple wells.

To account for the first proof of existence of an irrational magnitude, paradigm of a mathematical proof, historians of science as well as commentators of Aristotle refer to the texts on the incommensurability of the diagonal in the Prior Analytics, the most ancient texts on the subject. The usual proofs, using the representation of fractions as ratio of relatively prime integers i.e. the proposition VII.22 of the Elements, are based on a proposition at the end of the Book X of Euclid’s Elements. But their conclusions do not match the Aristotelian texts. In this talk, we propose a new demonstration conform to these texts. It is based on very old results of the odd/even theory, probably already known by the Babylonian and Egyptian mathematicians. As a consequence, we will see the irrationality of √2 was the first result impossible to prove directly. It was the birth of a new kind of proofs, the demonstrations ad absurdum, and, in a way, of ‘modern’ mathematics.

We shall trace the early history of the Exponential Theorem that states that, in the algebra of the formal power series in two non-commuting ideterminates x, y, the series naturally associated to log(e^xe^y) is a series of Lie polynomials in x,y. This theorem is a result of considerable importance in the theory of Lie groups. It is surprising perhaps that it has a complicated history going back over a century and involving many mathematicians.

Durata: 50 min. Abstract: The talk addresses linear and nonlinear partial differential containing strong singularities in the data or coefficients. We focus on situations formally involving products of distributions. After a survey on multiplication of distributions in applications, algebras of generalized functions are introduced, in which these type of problems can be solved. We demonstrate applications of the theory to semilinear wave equations with distribution data and to stochastic wave equations. Emphasis is put on the qualitative description of the properties of the generalized solution.

Abstract: We present an overview on the variational approach to quasistatic evolution problems in fracture mechanics. The approximate solutions are obtained by solving suitable incremental minimum problems.

We provide a characterization of in finite algebraic Galois extensions of the rationals with uniformly bounded local degrees. In particular we show that for an infi nite Galois extension of the rationals the following three properties are equivalent: having uniformly bounded local degrees at every prime; having uniformly bounded local degrees at almost every prime; having Galois group of finite exponent. The proof of this result enlightens interesting connections with Zelmanov's work on the Restricted Burnside Problem. We give a formula to explicitly compute bounds for the local degrees of an infi nite extension in some special cases. We relate the uniform boundedness of the local degrees to other properties: being a subfi eld of Q^(d), which is de fined as the compositum of all number fi elds of degree at most d over Q; being generated by elements of bounded degree. We prove that the above properties are equivalent for abelian extensions, but not in general; we provide counterexamples based on group-theoretical constructions with extraspecial groups and their modules.

Topological quantum field theories may be defined as appropriate functors > from the cobordism category. The classical > and perturbative versions thereof have started to be investigated only > recently. We discuss topological field theories in the AKSZ formalism (this includes Chern-Simons and BF theories as well as the Poisson sigma model). In this case, to boundary components (objects) one can associate a symplectic manifold and a coisotropic submanifold thereof, whereas to cobordisms one associates canonical relations. This very natural construction a special case with more structure than the general one recently introduced by V. Fock), yields to new viewpoints on, say, the moduli space of flat connections or the symplectic groupoid of a Poisson manifold. This also constitutes the starting point for the perturbative quantization of these theories. The possibility of including boundaries of boundaries (and so on) naturally yields to a Lurie-type description. Eventually, one may hope to be able to reconstruct perturbative topological field theories by gluing simple pieces. This is based on joint work in progress with P. Mnev and N. Reshetikhin.

Supergeometry a generalization of differential geometry where some coordinate are allowed to anticommute with each other. Most concepts and theorems for ordinary manifolds (like, e.g., vector fields and differential forms, Frobenius theorem, integration) have a generalization to supermanifolds. This allows one to use geometric intuition to understand many algebraic objects of current use (like differential forms or multivector fields). Another advantage is that many interesting geometric structures (like Poisson, Courant, generalized complex ) may be reformulated in terms of super symplectic geometry (with a refinement of the super grading). Reduction methods for the above structure may be unified in terms of super symplectic reduction. Using integration and map spaces (AKSZ method), one can associate to these structures topological fields theories, one example of which is the Poisson sigma model.

Resonances of the Schroedinger operator near the real axis are closely related with the underlying classical mechanics. Recently, it has been proved that the width (imaginary part) of resonances is greater than a constant multiple of the semiclassical parameter if the trapped set of the classical mechanics is hyperbolic periodic trajectories of Hausdorff dimension less than 2. We will consider the case where the trapped set contains a hyperbolic fixed point, and obtain the same result about the width of resonances even when the dimension of the trapped trajectories is large out of the fixed point. The key of the method is the propagation formula of WKB solutions near a hyperbolic fixed point from the incoming stable manifold to the outgoing one.

In the context of efficient energy use, electrical energy in electric drives plays a fundamental role. High efficiency energy storage systems permit energy recovery, peak shaving and power quality functions. Due to their cost and the importance of system integration, there is a need for a correct design based on technical-economical optimization. In this paper, a method to design a centralized storage system for the recovery of the power regenerated by a number of electric drives is presented. It is assumed that the drives follow deterministic power cycles, but shifted by an uncertain amount. Therefore the recoverable energy and, consequently, the storage size requires the optimization of a random cost function, embedding both the plant total cost and the saving due to the reduced energy consumption during the useful life of the storage. The underlying stochastic model for the power profile of the drives as a whole is built from a general Markov chain framework. A numerical example, based on Monte Carlo simulations, concerns the maximization of the recoverable potential energy of multiple bridge cranes, supplied by a unique grid connection point and a centralized supercapacitor storage system.

Coupled nonlinear mathematical models are essential in describing most natural phenomena, processes, and man-made systems. From large scale mathematical models of climate to modelling of quantum mechanical effects coupling and nonlinearity go often hand and hand. Coupled dynamic systems of partial differential equations (PDEs) provide a foundation for the description of many such systems, processes, and phenomena. In majority of cases, however, their solutions are not amenable to analytical treatments and the development, analysis, and applications of effective numerical approximations for such models become a core element in their studies. In this talk we will focus on mathematical models that are based on the Landau framework of phase transformations based on non-monotone free energy functions. Phase transformations are universal phenomena, and one specific example that we will consider in this talk is motivated by mesoscopic mathematical models for the description of multi-phase solid materials. Such models provide an intermediate length scale description between the atomistic level and the level that is usually used for bulk materials. In particular, we will discuss several classes of problems where non-equilibrium phenomena such as phase transformations are important, focusing on the dynamics of materials with shape memory. The talk will provide further insight into their application areas, the development of computationally efficient reduction procedures for their 3D modelling, and the construction of fully conservative schemes for solving the associated problems.
