Mathematical Models of Visual Perception

Location

NOTICE:
Due to high number of participants, the conference will take place in Aula Prodi - piazza San Giovanni in Monte, instead of Accademia delle Scienze

About Accademia delle Scienze visit:
Palazzo Poggi - via Zamboni 31

How to reach the Accademia delle scienze

Via Zamboni is the street where most of the University administrative offices are located.
You may consult a simplified map of Bologna that shows the location of the Accademia delle scienze.

Arriving on Foot from the City Center

Find your way to the base of the two leaning towers. One of the radial roads that starts at that point is Via Zamboni where most of the University administrative buildings and Departments are located. Walk on Via Zamboni away from the towers. Walk past Piazza Verdi where the Opera is located on your left. A few meters after you will find the Accademia delle scienze.
Continuing to the end of Via Zamboni you reach the old city gate called Porta Zamboni. In the square, called Piazza Porta S. Donato is located the Mathematics Department

General Information on Busses

You can purchase bus tickets either on board, or at "tobacco shops" that display the big "T" sign outside, or at newsstands. The current one-way fare is for 1.00€ (consult the currency converter for exchange rates). You may also purchase a "city-pass" which offers 8 trips, valid at any time, for 6.50€. For more information, call the bus service (ATC) at 051290290

Getting from the Railway Station to the Accademia

As you leave the Station from the main exit, cross the small piazza and the ring road (Viali) to the other side. Almost straight ahead is "Ristorante Risbo" in front of which you will find stops for busses 32, 36, and 37 that all go to the University. The direction of travel with respect to the Station exit is towards the left. The trip only takes 5 to 10 minutes. Ask the driver or someone for "Fermata San Donato". During working hours busses pass every 5-10 minutes. For railway station information, call 892021
Bologna is the most important railway node in Italy and is quickly reachable by train from all major Italian cities as well as many other European cities.
Approximate train travel times to/from Bologna:

  • Rome: 3 hours
  • Milan: 2 hours
  • Venice: 2 hours
  • Florence: 1 hour

Getting to the Accademia by Car

It is best not to arrive in downtown Bologna by car. The historic center, where the Accademia il located, is closed to motor vehicles. If your car has out-of-province (non-Bologna) license plates, you can drive on limited roads to get to hotels, etc. Even in the best case, the roads are very narrow, many of them one-way and on-street parking is just about non existent.
In case you absolutely must drive to the accademia, you can leave your car in Piazza di Porta S. Donato (at the end of via Zamboni). Arriving on the autostrada from any direction, get on the Bologna "tangenziale" (the Beltway) and look for exit 7, near the Fiera (Trade Fair) district. The exit is directly north of the city. From the exit, follow "Via Stalingrado" towards "centro". Once you arrive at Porta Mascarella after having crossed the bridge over the railroad tracks, turn left and follow the Viali to Porta San Donato.
